Oral Health Policy
At Tiny Toez we are committed to supporting the dental health of every child in our care — from the food and drinks we offer to daily tooth brushing routines and working in partnership with parents to build healthy habits that last a lifetime.
Our Aims
- To support the local NHS Trust Oral Health Strategy for improving the dental health of children in the area.
- To make children aware of the need to take care of their teeth.
- To support parents and carers in caring for their children's teeth.
- To promote foods and drinks which are less likely to cause tooth decay, and to provide only healthy, tooth-friendly snacks and drinks between mealtimes.
Several of our settings have completed an accredited Oral Health promoting day nursery programme, working in conjunction with the Smile Brite Programme. At these settings, children aged 3 and over brush their teeth once every day (wet or dry brushing) to encourage them to look after their teeth.
Snacks & Drinks
We take a thoughtful approach to what children eat and drink throughout the day, choosing options that support both general health and dental wellbeing.
Drink stations are accessible to children at any time during the day. Younger children are offered water at regular intervals.
Only milk or water are given in bottles. From 12 months, bottles are discouraged. Free-flow beakers or open-top cups are introduced from 6 months.
Squashes, fizzy drinks, tea, and coffee are not offered at any time.
All snacks given between meals are tooth friendly. Dried fruit is only provided as part of a main meal, not as a snack.
Special Occasions
We want children to enjoy celebrations whilst still supporting good oral health. Parents and carers are welcome to bring in a birthday cake in its original packaging (so staff can check ingredients for children with allergies), which can be served as a dessert after a main meal.
Parents and carers are encouraged to bring healthy, sugar-free snacks for birthdays and special occasions wherever possible. If treats containing sugar are brought in, they will be sent home at the end of the day, and staff will advise parents to offer these after meals for general and oral health reasons.
Confectionery items are not offered by nursery staff and are never used as rewards.
Baking & Cooking Sessions
Food chosen for baking and cooking activities is generally selected to promote healthy eating. All items that have been baked or cooked will either be sent home with children at the end of the day or eaten as part of our afternoon tea.
Dummies
We encourage parents and carers to limit the amount of time children use dummies. Staff will only use a dummy after other methods of comfort have been tried first.
Wherever possible we use a dummy tree to encourage children to give up their dummy in a positive and fun way.
Activities & Parent Engagement
As part of the EYFS (2021), oral health promoting activities take place regularly with both children and parents to highlight the importance of good dental habits. We share oral health information through:
- Oral health "top tips" featured in our newsletters.
- Advice on healthy sugar swaps to support tooth-friendly choices at home.
- Displays within the setting to further support parents' understanding of oral health.
Enrolment
Our enrolment form now includes a question asking whether your child is registered with a dentist. If they are not yet registered, staff will encourage parents and carers to do so and will signpost them to local dental surgeries.
Early dental registration is an important part of keeping children's teeth healthy as they grow — we're happy to help families find a local dentist if needed.

Kind words from our Tiny Toez families
Real feedback from parents helps new families feel confident when choosing the right nursery.
Special shout out to Jackie who had both our babies from early on. Sophie, Jon, Moo and Ro x
Overall a fantastic nursery, he skips into the nursery and looks forward to every day he goes there, which as a parent is the most important thing. The nursery staff have been excellent from when he was 12 months old to now 3 years old in developing his life skills, vocabulary, learning ability etc.
The classrooms are large with plenty of things for the children to do and the playgrounds are also very good.
I would have no hesitation in recommending Tiny Toez.
