Missing / Lost Child Procedure
In the unlikely event that a child goes missing within or from the nursery, the following procedure will be implemented immediately. The safety of every child in our care is our absolute priority.
Step-by-Step Procedure
All staff are trained to follow this procedure without delay. Every step is carried out in sequence, ensuring both the missing child and all other children remain as safe as possible throughout.
-
Immediate search of the nursery
All staff present are informed and a thorough search of the entire nursery is carried out straight away, followed by a search of the surrounding area. All other children remain supervised throughout.
-
Manager is informed
The manager is notified whilst all other available staff — including the cook and cleaner if they are on site — continue searching.
-
Manager carries out a second search
The manager independently conducts a second thorough search of the area to ensure nothing has been missed.
-
Police are contacted
If the child has not been found after the searches, the manager contacts the police immediately.
-
Parents/carers are contacted
The manager contacts the child's parents or carers and informs them that their child is missing.
-
Search continues
During this period, all available staff continue to actively search for the child without pause.
-
Normal routine maintained for other children
All remaining staff maintain as normal a routine as possible for the other children in their care, keeping disruption and distress to a minimum.
-
Manager meets police and parents/carers
The manager meets with the police and parents or carers on arrival and awaits instructions from the police.
-
Reassurance provided to parents/carers
The manager provides parents and carers with as much reassurance and support as possible throughout the situation.
-
Incident recorded in writing
All incidents are fully documented in writing as a formal record of events.
-
Ofsted is notified
The manager contacts Ofsted and informs them of all such incidents, as required.
Our Commitments
All remaining children stay fully supervised throughout any search or emergency situation.
Police and parents are contacted without delay if a child cannot be located after searching.
Every incident is recorded in writing and reported to Ofsted as required by our regulatory obligations.
The manager remains with parents and carers, offering reassurance and acting as their point of contact throughout.
This procedure is reviewed regularly and all staff are trained to implement it immediately and calmly. The safety and wellbeing of every child at Tiny Toez is our foremost responsibility.

Kind words from our Tiny Toez families
Real feedback from parents helps new families feel confident when choosing the right nursery.
Special shout out to Jackie who had both our babies from early on. Sophie, Jon, Moo and Ro x
Overall a fantastic nursery, he skips into the nursery and looks forward to every day he goes there, which as a parent is the most important thing. The nursery staff have been excellent from when he was 12 months old to now 3 years old in developing his life skills, vocabulary, learning ability etc.
The classrooms are large with plenty of things for the children to do and the playgrounds are also very good.
I would have no hesitation in recommending Tiny Toez.
