Food and Drink Policy
At Tiny Toez we consider snack and mealtimes as an important part of the nursery day. Eating is a social time that helps children learn about healthy eating, and nothing promotes the growth and wellbeing of a child more than a nutritional and well-balanced diet.
Our Aim
At snack and mealtimes, we aim to provide nutritious food which meets each child's individual dietary needs. We aim to meet the full requirements of Ofsted's Welfare Requirements on Food and Drink and address statutory guidance to which providers should always have regard.
Food is also used at mealtimes as a learning tool — not only to teach children about being healthy, but also to explore counting, colour recognition, shape, where food comes from in the world and cultural differences.
We will notify Ofsted and any other relevant agencies should we have more than 2 related cases of food poisoning on the premises.
Dietary Needs & Allergies
We take dietary needs and allergies extremely seriously. Here is how we manage them:
Before a child starts at nursery, we find out from parents and carers about any dietary needs, including allergies.
Any dietary needs are recorded on the child's enrolment form. A copy is kept in the room so staff are always aware, and in the kitchen if the nursery has an on-site cook.
Any child with an allergy has a separate health care plan completed by parents/carers and staff, detailing signs and symptoms and what treatment or action is needed should they have an allergic reaction.
We regularly consult with parents and carers to ensure our records about their child's dietary requirements are kept up to date.
Parents and carers are told daily what their child has eaten. For younger children this is recorded on a daily diary sheet or in their home/nursery diary.
Our Food Standards
We plan menus in advance, including a wide range of foods, and display menus of snacks and meals for parents and carers to view. Menus are on a four-week rotation.
We always provide nutritious food, avoiding large quantities of fat, sugar, salt, artificial additives, preservatives and colourings
Only healthy, tooth-friendly snacks are provided between meals. Dried fruit is only used as part of a main meal, not as a snack
We include foods from different cultures, providing children with familiar foods and introducing them to new ones
All children have access to fresh drinking water throughout the day and are regularly encouraged to drink
Full fat milk for children aged 1–2 years. Semi-skimmed milk for children over 2 who eat well and have a varied diet
Salt or sugar will never be added to any foods or drinks at any time
Food Safety & Choking Prevention
- To prevent choking, foods are cut and offered appropriately — grapes cut into quarters, sausages cut lengthways, fruits and vegetables cut into large chunks
- Allergens, cultural requirements and children's eating abilities are taken into careful consideration and risk assessed where required
- All food will be checked before use to ensure it has not exceeded its use-by date
- All staff members who have contact with food hold a basic food hygiene certificate at minimum
- Confectionery is not used as part of the setting's reward system
- Puddings will never be withheld or used as a punishment should children not eat their main meal
The Eating Environment
All children and staff wash their hands before eating. The area in which they eat is clean, bright and free from toys and activities. Children sit on child-sized chairs at child-sized tables and have appropriate cutlery and crockery for their age and stage of development.
Staff sit with the children while they eat to encourage healthy eating, good table manners and conversation
Mealtimes help children develop independence through making choices, helping to set tables and feeding themselves
Free flow beakers introduced from 6 months. Open top cups introduced as soon as possible. Bottles discouraged from 12 months
All children are encouraged to eat but are never forced. Children who refuse at mealtimes will be offered food later in the day
Fussy Eating
At Tiny Toez we understand that not all children like all foods and that every child will have had a different experience of food before starting at the nursery. During our induction process, parents and carers are asked to give us as much information as possible about the types of foods their child eats and what they like and dislike.
When we have children who are fussy with their food, they are given a little of what everyone else is having and encouraged to try different foods with lots of praise and encouragement. If they like a particular food then more is given. If they still don't like what they've tried, an alternative meal is given.
In line with the First Steps Nutrition Trust, we will offer a meal 5 times before it is removed from our menu, to encourage children to try new foods and allow time for their tastes to adapt. Staff also sit and eat with the children to provide a positive role model.
Packed Lunches
If a child brings in a packed lunch, this will need to be in line with our Healthy Eating ethos.
Fruit, vegetables, sandwiches or wraps, samosas, cheese, crackers or rice cakes, salads and dips, yogurts or rice pudding
Chocolates, sweets and biscuits cannot be accepted in packed lunches
With the exception of items that would make a mess if returning opened (such as yogurt), we will send uneaten items home so parents and carers know what was eaten and what their child left.
Children's Birthdays
We are happy for parents to send in a birthday cake to celebrate their child's birthday at the setting.
Birthday cakes must be shop bought and in original packaging so we can identify the ingredients and safeguard any children with allergies. The cake will then be substituted as the pudding following the children's main meal.
Breastfeeding
At Tiny Toez we recognise that when mothers return to work, they may wish to continue breastfeeding their child. Where appropriate arrangements are made with their employer, we offer a private room within the nursery for mums to come in and breastfeed their baby during the day.
We are also supportive of our staff members who return to work after maternity leave whilst still breastfeeding, and where possible offer them time and a private room to breastfeed and/or express breast milk during the day.
Food Storage
Baby Room
- Formula milk should be brought in by parents in an unopened tin or unopened long-life cartons, clearly labelled with the child's name
- Formula milk bottles will be prepared freshly on site using only fresh boiling water
- Bottles will be placed in cool jugs of water to cool prior to consumption
- We NEVER use the microwave to heat milk — bottle warmers or jugs of hot water are used instead
- Milk heated up will be discarded after one hour
- All cow's milk, coconut milk, almond milk, soya milk or similar pasteurised milk will be stored appropriately in the fridge
Main Kitchen
- A cook is employed to provide high quality and inclusive meals in nurseries with an on-site kitchen
- Stock rotation happens on a weekly basis and any perishable food upon opening is dated accordingly
- The temperature of delivery vans is recorded when food is delivered
- Any fresh produce that is frozen for later use will be labelled with the date of freezing
- All fridge temperatures are taken on a twice daily basis by staff
- Staff food is stored in a separate fridge wherever possible, clearly labelled and separate from children's food
This policy has been created following Food Standards Agency Guidelines. For more information visit www.food.gov.uk
Sustainability
Staff complete a daily sheet for the cook detailing exactly how many meals are needed each day, including how many with special dietary requirements. This helps reduce food waste as the cook can prepare and cook for the exact number of children present each day.
We also grow vegetables with the children that they can then eat at mealtimes as an alternative to always buying vegetables. As much packaging as possible is recycled.

Kind words from our Tiny Toez families
Real feedback from parents helps new families feel confident when choosing the right nursery.
Special shout out to Jackie who had both our babies from early on. Sophie, Jon, Moo and Ro x
Overall a fantastic nursery, he skips into the nursery and looks forward to every day he goes there, which as a parent is the most important thing. The nursery staff have been excellent from when he was 12 months old to now 3 years old in developing his life skills, vocabulary, learning ability etc.
The classrooms are large with plenty of things for the children to do and the playgrounds are also very good.
I would have no hesitation in recommending Tiny Toez.
