Statement of Intent

Our nursery believes that children flourish best when they know how they are expected to behave and should be free to play and learn without fear of being hurt or unfairly restricted by anyone else. Children need to have set boundaries of behaviour for their own safety and their peers.

Our Behaviour Management Coordinator

Each individual nursery setting has a named Behaviour Management Coordinator. Please speak to your child's nursery directly to find out who this is.

We require the named person to:

• Keep up to date with legislation, research and thinking on promoting positive behaviour and on handling children's behaviour where it may require additional support
• Access relevant sources of expertise on promoting positive behaviour

In addition, the manager will check that all staff have relevant in-service training on promoting positive behaviour. We keep a record of staff attendance at this training.

Our Approach to Behaviour Management

Children's behaviour must be managed effectively and in a manner appropriate for their stage of development and particular individual needs.

All staff caring for children at Tiny Toez are able to manage a wide range of children's behaviour in a way that promotes their welfare and development. We are aware of and respect the varied cultures of children and parents attending our setting and their views and beliefs regarding behaviour management.

All staff are consistent in their approach to children's general behaviour and follow agreed procedures outlining how to respond to changes in children's behaviour. Where a child requires ongoing behaviour management due to underlying problems, their key person will work closely with parents/carers and other professionals to ensure consistency with the strategies in place for the child.

Encouraging Positive Behaviour

Staff encourage positive behaviour at all times using some or all of the following methods, depending on the age and stage of development of the child:

Daily Routines & Activities

Staff also incorporate the following into daily routines and activities:

• Helping children to understand the effects of their behaviour on others
• Discussing feelings using the Colour Monster approach
• Reiterating the setting's golden rules — good looking, good sitting, good listening, kind hands, walking feet
• Helping children understand their rights to be kept safe and encouraging them to talk about ways to avoid harming others
• Helping children challenge bullying, harassment and name-calling with confidence
• Encouraging responsibility — such as helping with tidying up to support growing independence
• Reassuring children that they are always valued as individuals even if their behaviour may sometimes be unacceptable
• Seeking advice from external agencies including SEND advisory teachers where needed

Physical Intervention

Children are individuals and behaviour should be managed by staff according to that child's stage of understanding and development. Staff should use their professional judgment when managing any situation, only acting upon what they saw or heard.

Physical intervention is only used if it is necessary for the purposes of averting immediate danger of personal injury to any person (including the child) or to manage a child's behaviour if absolutely necessary.

Managing Unacceptable Behaviour

When managing behaviour that has been observed as unacceptable or inappropriate, staff use the following methods:

The nursery recognises that most children will display some of the following behaviour at times and that most of it will be dealt with without the need for a meeting with parents/carers:

Exclusion Policy

The nursery reserves the right to permanently exclude a child from the setting if their consistent unacceptable behaviour is putting other children and staff at risk of harm. This would always be a last resort after seeking support from parents/carers and other agencies, and we would offer as much support as possible in finding alternative childcare at a setting that could better cater for their individual needs.

The nursery also reserves the right to exclude a child from the setting should parents/carers not support staff and/or outside agencies in trying to rectify unwanted behaviours. Again, this would always be the last resort when managing children's behaviour.
